iPhoto?

iPhoto, originally uploaded by punquin.

Yes, I've been an Apple user since I was teenie-tiny. We'd never had anything else in my house. But, I've somehow never used iPhoto. I'd had version 2.0 that came on my desktop computer (a hand-me-down from my dad, as are all my desktops of the past) and had been annoyed when it would launch if I plugged in a camera. I had turned off that auto-launch and forgotten about it.

Fast forward to now... I have tons of photos all over my computer and I am a Flickr user as well. I don't know much about iPhoto '09 yet, but I have version 8 from my refurbished laptop, so I copied that over to try out.

So far I have about 4000 photos added. I like that it is organizing them to one spot, but I do feel it is lacking features. Can anyone who has iLife '09 tell me all the wonderful reasons why I need to spend $80 I don't have to upgrade? Will it be worth my while?

if you use flikr and/or facebook 09 is a must. you can auto upload/update your pictures and sync them with 09, which is very nice. also, the places and face recognition features are great to me. i always sort of liked iPhoto, but now with 09 i actually find it very very useful.

i can show it to you on the weekend if you want!

Hm... I use both Flickr and Facebook, though I don't upload everything to FB. It is definitely sounding worth it.

Thanks!

I'm actually contemplating upgrading for just that reason. I have a friend who just got it and they feel it's worth it for flickr integration alone.

Conversely, I'm going to buy a family pack at fed contractor discount. I find it funny that one copy is like $80, whereas five copies are like $120 or something. Do you have more than one mac? or friends you could share with?

I do have multiple computers, but only two running 10.5.6. I think I'd be fine having my photos in one place. I don't have any on my laptop right now...

Apple still aren't serial cops, so the family pack is just an honor system thing. I don't think I'd ever want more than one copy of iPhoto though, I can't imagine going "Now which computer did I plug my camera into THAT day..."

It uses your camera's built in GPS and puts a location tag on all of your photos. It does face recognition tags, too. Pretty damn cool, I think!

Huh... I wonder if my camera has GPS. Is that a super new thing?

Crabcake mentioned the "Faces" and "Location" sorting (I think I tweeted those to you?), but they've also improved the editing tools (particularly red eye elimination). Also, that $ gets you the rest of the iLife set, and there have been some big improvements in the other programs, too. All in all, it's a tremendous software value for the money.
